Otoplasty is one of the most frequent facial surgeries that Dr. Joaquín Pérez-Guisado Rosa performs. It is performed in adults and children over 3 years old. In most cases, it entails the correction of the position of protruding ears, through the variation of Chongchet’s and Mustardé techniques. In both techniques, the consequent scar is imperceptible, because it is placed behind the ear.

Chongchet’s technique
It is a definitive techhique, consisting in drawing an ellipse of skin through an incision behind the ear, in order to display the auricular cartilage which is separated from the skin on the backside of the ear. Once it is displayed, the cartilage will be remodelled through the weakening of the backside, performing surface, longitudinal and cross incisions in order to fold the ear backward in a natural and controlled way, creating a more aesthetic position. Some stitches are necessary to fix the cartilage to its new position and to close the skin.
Moustardé’s technique
This technique may not result definitive, and that is why we do not recommend it as first election technique. We only use it to make small changes on the ear. The main difference with the former technique is that the cartilage is not remodelled, but it is folded backward through stitches. If this suture is pulled out, the ear could return to the starting position.
A compressive bandage is necessary in both interventions, with the previous placement of ear moulds to preserve the new shape and position of the ear. That bandage will be worn for 7 or 10 days and it will be lately replaced with an adjusted headband that the patient must wear for 3 more weeks.
Both interventions are performed under local anaesthesia (with or without sedation) in adults and children over 12 years old. In children under 12 years old, this surgery will be performed under general anaesthesia. The duration of surgery will be around one hour. In case of adults and children over 12 years old, the surgery does not need hospitalization; but in case of children under 12 years old, they will be admitted into hospital and they can go home on the same day.
