Gynecomastia is an increase in the volume of the breasts in a male, due to an excess fatty tissue and glandular breast tissue of one breast or both of them. This feminine appearance can result from a high quantity of fat and/or over-development of the mammary gland.
There are different types of gynecomastia: Glandular Gynecomastia (excess glandular tissue), Pseudogynecomastia (excess fatty tissue) and Mixed Gynecomastia (excess of fatty and glandular tissue).
Gynecomastia may occur in both: adolescent boys and adult men. It is related to hormonal changes caused by puberty, to the consumption of certain substances (steroids, anabolic substances, corticosteroids, marihuana, excessive alcohol consumption, certain medications, etc.) or to some diseases (liver cirrhosis, hyperprolactinaemia, Cushing’s syndrome, hyperestrogenism, obesity, etc.).
Themain target of male reduction mammoplasty is to erase the feminine appearance of breasts. Dr. Joaquín Pérez-Guisado Rosa will perform your surgery with the best value throughout Andalucía.
How is the surgical intervention performed to remove gynecomastia?
Depending on the grade and type of gynecomastia, one intervention or another will be chosen. If gynecomastia is due to an excess fatty tissue and there is not skin redundancy, only a liposuction of the breast area will be necessary, making two small incisions to introduce the aspiration cannula. On the other hand, if gynecomastia is due to an excess glandular tissue or to a mixed excess of gland and fat, Dr. Joaquín Pérez-Guisado Rosa will perfom an incision on the lower edge of both areolae to remove the excess glandular tissue through subcutaneous mastectomy. In Mixed Gynecomastia, both proceedings will be frequently performed to achieve the best possible result. In those cases existing skin redundancy, it is also necessary to remove excess skin through mastopexy, usually periareolar mastopexy.
The duration of surgery will depend on the type of intervention performed and, in worst cases, it will not take longer than 3 hours. It can be performed under general or local anaesthesia (with or without sedation), according to the difficulty and the type of intervention. The patient will be admitted to hospital on the day of surgery and will go home on the same day.
