Botox – Botulinum Toxin

Type A botulinum toxin or “botox” is a protein which is able to produce transient muscle paralysis, since it blocks the nerve endings responsible of muscle contraction. These effects can start after 48 hours, peaking at 5-7 days. This paralysis is transient and its action time is variable (4-6 months).

How are botulinum toxin injections performed?

It is a fast treatment which does not require anaesthesia but, for your peace of mind, we can use a topical anaesthetic cream. These injections take around 15 minutes and a prior assessment by Dr. Joaquín Pérez-Guisado Rosa is necessary. It is a painless procedure, because microinjections are performed with very fine needles to make the patient come back to routine activities immediately.

It is not a final technique in wrinkles removal, it is necessary to perform periodic interventions, but it is not advisable that new injections are repeated before three months or using very high doses.

When is the usage of botox recommended?

It is recommended in vaginismus, excessive sweating in armpits, hands and soles of the feet, and in the removal of wrinkles in neck, frown, upper lip, forehead or periorbital wrinkles.

Contraindications and side effects of botulinum toxin or “botox”

Botox injections are contraindicated in those patients who suffer neuromuscular diseases such as Lambert-Eaton syndrome or Myasthenia gravis. There is no scientific evidence to indicate that botulinum toxin produces adverse effects in women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, but it is advisable not to undergo this treatment in that moment.

The consumption of aspirin, anti-inflammatory or blood-thinner medicines in high doses is not advisable during the first week after botox injection. Next days after injection, it is appropriate that you avoid exposure to extreme temperatures (severe cold, sauna, UV or sun).

All possible side effects are temporary and mild. Redness, small haematomas, muscle weakness or headache may occur.
